Context

The Lojing Highlands REDD+ Forest Conservation Project is a high-integrity nature-based climate initiative within the ecologically significant highland forests of Lojing, Kelantan, Malaysia.

The project aims to conserve 1,089.11 hectares of natural tropical forest by preventing deforestation and forest degradation while protecting biodiversity, maintaining critical watershed functions, and supporting long-term climate resilience.

Developed under the REDD+ framework, the project applies internationally recognised carbon accounting principles and robust Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems to quantify and safeguard forest carbon stocks—generating high-integrity carbon credits alongside measurable environmental and social co-benefits.

Who are the key stakeholders?

The project is partnership-based: Layang Kaji Sdn Bhd is the project entity and landholder, working with FRIM Incorporated and co-developed with Sastena Technology on project development within the Malaysia Forest Fund Forest Carbon Offset (FCO) framework.

Conservation outcomes are designed to protect water catchments, safeguard intact highland forests, and deliver credible avoided-emissions accounting through REDD+ methodologies—supporting biodiversity, watershed functions, and long-term climate resilience for local communities and the wider region.

Objectives and approach

The project prevents deforestation and degradation, conserves existing forest carbon stocks, and quantifies avoided greenhouse gas emissions for Forest Carbon Units under Malaysia FCO and REDD+ methodologies.

Objectives

Conserve 1,089.11 hectares of natural tropical forest through avoided deforestation and avoided forest degradation. Protect biodiversity—including endemic species such as the fire snail—and maintain watershed and water-catchment functions across the Lojing highlands.

Approach

Apply REDD+ and Forest Carbon Offset (FCO) methodologies with robust MRV to quantify and safeguard carbon stocks. The project is currently in Project Design Document development, targeting first issuance in 2027 over a 30-year crediting period.
